Being a Barnard Bartender is a great way to experience many of the exquisite events held all over the city. I've met Ambassadors to the U.N., and Comedy Central comedians while working jobs that vary from helping with dinner parties to working a wine bar. I've worked bar mitzvahs, a charity reception in an Upper East Side shoe boutique, and a hair salon opening in the Plaza Hotel; each job is unique in an interesting way. ~Yolanda Lannquist, BC 2010

Classes FAQ

When Is It Offered?

The Spring 2012 class will be on Tuesdays at 8:00 PM starting January 31, in 202 Altschul. The final exam will be Tuesday, February 28.

Classes run for about an hour - for classes covering a lot of material, class time may go until 9:30 PM, but most classes will end by 9:00 PM.

Why Should I Take the Course?

The Barnard Bartending Agency Class prepares students to bartend throughout the New York City area as trained Barnard Bartenders. The 5-week course teaches students all essential mixology and partyhelping information.

Who Can Take It?

The Barnard Bartending Class is open to anyone who wishes to take it.

If you are not a member of the Columbia University community, however, you MUST have a reference from someone who is.

Positions in the Barnard Bartending Agency are offered to Barnard students only. Students must be 18 years of age to work in the Agency, however those under 18 are welcome to take the course, and if they pass the exam, will be able to work their first job as soon as they turn 18.

What Happens If I Pass the Exam?

All enrolled Barnard students who pass the test given at the end of the five-week course are offered a position in the Barnard Bartending Agency. Unfortunately, we are unable to admit international students into the agency. Barnard College requires all Barnard Bartenders to have US passport.

All non-Barnard students (and any Barnard students who request it) who pass the test receive a certificate of completion and/or recommendations, which will aid them in getting a job at a bar, restaurant, or catering agency.

We do NOT guarantee job placement, nor do we award a New York State Bartender's license.

How Much Does It Cost?

Our course is actually the least expensive course in the city.

he price of the class is $120, check or cash, payable on the first day of class.

Students who have already completed the course may take the exam for $50.

Unfortunately we do not accept payment via credit card.

Checks can be made out to "The Barnard Bartending Agency."
